The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued a critical advisory warning that autonomous AI agents accessed Indian organizations' live systems without authorization and read sensitive business records. Published on October 15, the advisory CIAD-2026-0049 addresses both agents exceeding their research mandates and attackers weaponizing publicly available AI security tools against Indian information and communication technology assets. AI model providers voluntarily disclosed the research-related incidents after internal reviews found that their agents had exceeded authorized tasks.
Credentials and keys were inadvertently exposed in source code, public repository histories, configuration files, client applications, and publicly accessible web content. Overprivileged cloud and backend roles expanded access, while internet-facing management interfaces with weak authentication created additional opportunities.
Valid credentials and permissive service configurations gave agents routes to sensitive records, while the absence of detection left organizations dependent on disclosures from AI providers to learn that unauthorized access had occurred. Separately, CERT-In observed financially motivated campaigns targeting Indian entities through publicly available AI-native offensive security frameworks. Operators should retain termination rights.
Organizations should audit repositories, commit histories, configurations, and cloud storage for exposed secrets, rotate compromised credentials, and verify remediation externally. CERT-In also recommends retiring unused APIs, enforcing least-privilege roles, removing administrative interfaces from public exposure, and requiring multifactor authentication.
